'Hello!' I'm Lewis, and I'm a Lizard. Do you know much about us? No? Then I
think I had better tell you how clever we are before I begin my story.
No, I'm not boasting, the Bible says we are clever, and it's because God has made us
that way. We are not very big, but our family have a lovely home, and God says we are very clever for
knowing how to find such lovely homes.
You will never guess where we live so I had better tell you. We live in a Palace in
Jerusalem, and it is SO beautiful. Lots of sparkling gold and silver everywhere, and
outside you have never seen such glorious gardens with flowers of every colour, and many lovely pools with
bright fishes darting in and out of the ferns. We wouldn't dream of living anywhere else!
The Palace belongs to King Herod, and you would think he would be the kindest and
happiest man in the country, but he isn't, and I'll tell you how I know.
Some of our cousins came to visit us, and as we were lying in the sun on a rock near a
lovely pool, Lily, our cousin, asked - 'Have you heard the latest news?' She was
very excited.
'No, nothing special - What is it?' I asked her.
'I'm surprised the Palace hasn't heard the news first!!!' she said rather smugly.
'All right, all right' interrupted my brother Lenny. 'So you know first . Come on then, tell us what
this amazing piece of news is.'
Lily laughed. She enjoyed teasing, and we didn't mind. We are very fond of our cousins.
Lily looked around to make sure she had everyone's attention then she chuckled, and,
with her eyes sparkling with excitement, said - 'Three very Wise Men have arrived
in Jerusalem, and you will never guess what they are saying!' She paused.
We had no idea, of course, and told her so.
Lily was delighted. 'Then I'll have to tell you' she said.
'They are saying ....... They are saying, that they have followed a Special Star for miles and miles,
because it's the Star of a New-born King. The Christ! There! What
do you think of that?'
We were stunned into silence. No-one spoke as we thought about this startling news.
Then it seemed that everyone started to talk at once.
'Where is the baby?'
'Have YOU seen this Special Star?'
'Are the Wise Men coming here?'
'Does King Herod know?'
Oh! We went quiet again as we thought of what Herod would think about a new Jewish baby King, the Christ!
Oh dear! He wasn't going to like that at all.
We sat there for a while just looking at the fishes in the pool, and the beautiful dragonflies and
butterflies. The bees with their happy Buzz went about their work of honey gathering, everything was as
usual, but we had an idea that life would never be
the same from now on.
Eventually, I said 'We must get back to the Palace to see if anything is happening.'
Then, turning to my cousins, I asked 'Would you like to stay to tea?'
They said they couldn't, but would come again tomorrow to see if we had found out
anything. So we said 'Good-bye' and hurried back to the large Hall. We climbed up the wall, across the
ceiling, and into our special corner.
Oh, sorry! I forgot to mention that we can run up walls, and also walk upside down across the ceilings -
clever isn't it? Great fun too! We have special pads on our toes
which help us to do this, but, to get back to my story, we found the Hall empty, and
were just talking about what we should do next when Herod and his teachers, wise men, and priests, came in.
'Now' said Herod angrily. 'Is this story I've been hearing true?'
'You mean the one about the Christ, the King of the Jews being born?' asked one of the teachers.
Herod glared at him! 'Of course' he snapped ......... 'Well?'
'I believe so' one of his wise men answered, looking rather scared.
Herod tapped the Throne impatiently. 'So, where will he be born - you know that, I
hope!'
'Of course, your Majesty. Of course' answered one of the priests.
'Then where?' shouted Herod getting to his feet and beginning to walk around.
'In Bethlehem in Judaea. Would you like us to read what the Prophet said about him?'
Herod nodded angrily. So the priest read out that a leader would be born in Bethlehem who would guide and
rule the Jewish people.
Herod was not happy!
'OUT, all of you' he roared. 'OUT!'
They went!
Herod then began walking up and down the room until an idea came to him.
'The very thing' we heard him say, and he laughed as he rang the bell for his Secretary. It was not a very
nice laugh, and we shivered.
'Take a letter to the Three Wise Men, asking them to spend the day with me tomorrow' he said. 'Get it
delivered immediately.'
And they both left the Hall.
'What is he up to?' asked Lenny.
'Nothing good, I know' said Lucy, my sister. We agreed.
'Let's make sure we are here when the Three Wise Men come tomorrow' I said. They nodded, and we made sure
we were.
The next day came and the Three Wise Men arrived wearing the most gorgeous robes - and I don't think that
pleased Herod either, as he hadn't dressed up for the occasion.
But he was very pleasant to them, and smiled a lot as he asked them all about the Star, and then he wished
them a good journey to Bethlehem and told them to be sure to come back and let him know exactly where the
baby was so that he could worship him too!
'He doesn't want to worship the baby' Lucy whispered to me.
'I know' I whispered back.
Afterwards, when the Wise Men had left, we heard Herod plotting to kill the baby. We were horrified -
what could we do?
'It's too far for us to go to Bethlehem' said Lenny.
'Who would believe us?' asked Lucy.
'Oh dear, here we go worrying about what WE can do' I said. 'Have we forgotten we have a Heavenly Father
who can help us? After all, the baby IS God's Son.'
They looked rather shamefaced at me. 'Sorry, Lewis' they said. 'We didn't REALLY
forget.'
'Of course not' I smiled. 'We were just very worried about the baby, I know.'
So we told our Heavenly Father, and our story had a wonderful ending - a very happy one.
Our Heavenly Father warned the Wise Men in a dream not to go back to Herod, but to return to their country
by a different way.
We were so pleased, and so were our cousins.
In fact the only one who wasn't pleased - was Herod!!
